No one with multiple myeloma needs to be alone in their fight against this challenging blood cancer. Whether you are a newly diagnosed patient or a loved one of someone suffering from multiple myeloma, this book offers help. Written by a researcher and a physician with over 20 years of experience treating patients with myeloma, Understanding Multiple Myeloma provides a comprehensive overview of symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, supportive care, and much more. As a patient, becoming informed about the nature and treatment of this disease can help facilitate a more active and supportive relationship with your healthcare team. Comprehensive, insightful, and compact, Understanding Multiple Myeloma is an essential guide for anyone coping with the physical and emotional turmoil of this disease.

I found this book to be a useful tool in my own journey as a multiple myeloma patient as it answered questions that directly affect my own diagnosis. The added footnotes and definitions at the bottom of each page allows the reader to have immediate clarification of words they may not understand.

This is a well-written book for patients with multiple myeloma and their caregivers. It begins with information concerning the frequency of multiple myeloma emphasizing that it is a malignancy that involves bone marrow plasma cells in older persons. It goes on in Chapter 2 to tell the reader the features of the disease. It describes the monoclonal protein in the blood and urine as well as its relationship to the closely related conditions, Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS), Smoldering Multiple Myeloma (SMM), Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia (WM), POEMS syndrome, solitary and extramedullary plasmacytomas, the heavy-chain diseases and other related conditions. I am sure that patients and their caregivers will find this introductory book to be of interest and value to them.

Understanding Multiple Myeloma is the most comprehensive patient resource on multiple myeloma that I have encountered. A diagnosis of multiple myeloma can be overwhelming, but one of the greatest features of this book is that it covers all aspects of the disease in a uniquely singular resource. Dr. Gasparetto and her team have been remarkable not only in their personal care and attention, but the simplicity and clarity with which they have communicated treatment decisions and protocols. This has allowed us to be comfortable and confident throughout this challenging process.
